The National Eye Institute performed
The Age-Related Eye
Disease Study (AREDS) to determine if vitamin and mineral supplementation
could decrease the risk of AMD. The AREDS Study found that high levels of
antioxidants and zinc could decrease the risk of macular degeneration by 25%.
The researchers who performed this major and significant clinical trial also
found that these same nutrients could decrease visual loss by 17%.
They concluded that while nutritional supplementation is not a cure for AMD,
it may be of significant value in preventing the disease from progressing
further or from progressing as quickly.
